Planning a trip abroad requires more than booking flights and packing a passport. Travel health preparation can be the difference between a great holiday and a hospital stay — especially when visiting countries where vaccinations are required by law or strongly recommended.

4–8 weeks before you travel

This is the ideal window to book a travel consultation. Many vaccines need multiple doses spaced weeks apart, and some only reach full protection two weeks after the final dose.

  • Yellow Fever — required for entry to 40+ countries; certificate is valid for life
  • Hepatitis A & B — recommended for most international travel
  • Typhoid — for areas with poor sanitation
  • Rabies — for travellers visiting rural areas, working with animals, or staying long-term
  • Japanese Encephalitis — for rural Asia trips

Malaria prevention

Malaria affects much of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South and Southeast Asia, and pockets of Central and South America. Prevention combines tablets (anti-malarials prescribed before, during and after travel) with bite avoidance — long sleeves, DEET-based repellent, mosquito nets.

Travel essentials beyond vaccines

  • Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for European trips
  • A small medication kit: paracetamol, antihistamines, oral rehydration sachets
  • Copies of any prescription medications and a doctor’s letter
